SDLP’s Tony Quinn takes over top job

Councillor Quinn received the Chains of Office from former chair Sinn Fein councillor Sean Clarke, whose party colleague John McNamee took the Vice-Chair spot for the incoming year.

In his outgoing speech Councillor Clarke thanked his party, council colleagues and staff, friends, neighbours and constituents for a “memorable year” in office.

“I want to thank my party for giving me the opportunity to perform the extremely important position of Chairman of Cookstown District Council,” he said.

“I also want to thank the Councillors who worked with me throughout the year especially my Vice-Chairman Christine McFlynn who was always available to when called upon and also the staff who I worked with. And of course I must also thank the local press and the local photographers for their co-operation during the year.

“I want to thank my friends, neighbours and constituents, and constituents across the Council for their support. I also particularly want to thank my wife and family who helped to facilitate me and support me through the year.

The former chair also reflected on the range of activities, developments and awards achieved in the district over the last year, and asked those present to remember the many councillors and staff who had suffered bereavements over the last year.”

Taking up the chair, Councillor Quinn, who also enjoyed the role in 2009/2010, said he looked forward to the year ahead.

“We are here to serve the people and I look forward to reaching out to the people, all our people, promoting good relations and helping to instill a strong sense of community spirit.”

“I will do my utmost to serve this district and serve my abilities as chair as best as possible.”
