Semi-permanent speed devices to be erected across Armagh Banbridge and Craigavon Council area

A pilot scheme will see devices erected in prime locations, including outside schools.

The scheme is being trialed by Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council after investing ‘speed indicator devices’ via the PCSP.

Welcoming the pilot, SDLP Cllr Ciaran Toman revealed there would be five locations in Lurgan initially trialed in this scheme.

Cllr Toman said: “I would like to wholeheartedly applaud the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for having invested in this trial pilot scheme through the PCSP of speed indicator devices.

“The 11 that were purchased and the 20 locations confirmed do represent the Council’s commitment to protecting its citizens while on the roads.

“The SDLP was instrumental providing guidance as to where these devices would be located.

“The locations of one are on Francis Street and the Castor Bay Road outside Tannaghmore PS, each location was an absolute necessity.

“However, as we are seeing in other parts of the district the positioning of the device could be improved.”

The SDLP councillor added: “They should act as a speed deterrent for drivers and encourage them to decrease their speed. That is the great benefit about this trial period for these signs as it allows us the opportunity to iron out any issues there may be before going forward with any further investment in SIDs.

“I would hope the Council will look favourably on this to continue to work collectively for the safety and security of all our citizens.”

Cllr Toman explained that the devices are semi-permanent as they are fitted with poles and attached to the ground by a socket.

“The reason why they are semi-permanent is because it loses its effectiveness within weeks/months and is best to move them around.

“Yes, they are speed devices, and it is a device to collect information on speeding, but it won’t generate a speeding ticket unless police are present. There are no speed cameras if you understand. The areas agreed are areas of high complaints from speeding and initially 20 locations have been identified throughout the borough with expectation to further roll this out depending on funding.

“The 20 locations are spread across the borough, five in each of Lurgan, Banbridge, Armagh and then between Portadown and Craigavon.”

SDLP Cllr Declan McAlinden welcomed the new speed devices. “I have been calling for speed calming measures for quite some time. I would like to see them rolled out in rural areas such as Derrymacash and Derrytrasna and particularly outside schools.”
