Sexually abused step brother and sister

A 24-year-old man sexually abused his step brother and sister over a five-year period, Londonderry Crown Court heard.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, shared a bedroom with the daughter of his father’s partner when the offences took place.

He was under 18 when he sexually assaulted the girl, when she was aged 14 to 15, and his step brother when he was between the ages of eight and nine.

The court heard the defendant had sexually corrupted the girl. He began tickling her and getting into bed beside her when she was 14 and his behaviour escalated to sexual assaulting her. The 29-year-old touched the girl over and under her clothes.

The victim always asked him to stop and told him she did not want him to touch her.

The court was told the girl remembered thinking ‘why has he done this?’ but said she was never one for confrontation.

She eventually confided in her boyfriend that she had been sexually abused and he told her family.

It was at this stage the abuse of her brother came to light. The court heard the defendant had touched the boy on the upper leg and his crotch.

He also asked him to perform a sex act on him.

However, the boy refused.

A defence barrister said his client was full of remorse and accepted fully the blame was totally on him.

He added that the defendant “didn’t want to hurt her and was fond of her”.

Judge Philip Babington adjourned sentencing until this week.
