Stole from his employer

AFTER starting out by stealing crisps and drinks from his employer a Craigavon man began taking money from the till, the local court heard last Friday.

Twenty one year old Gareth Baker, of Drumellan Mews, Craigavon, admitted stealing cash and food items to the value of £800 on Discount NI.

The court heard he was interviewed on May 28 and admitted stealing items including drinks and crisps over approximately a couple of months.

A solicitor for Baker said it was a breach of trust involving a significant amount.

He said his client started out taking sweets and drinks while on duty and progressed to taking money out of the till.

The solicitor said that according to a pre-sentence report Baker was suitable for community service and asked the court to go down that road.

Deputy District Judge, Mr Chris Holmes, said it was quite clear Baker had thought this through with regard to camera angles so as not to be caught.

He added that with some reluctance he would not go down the route of a custodial sentence even though it was a breach of trust case.

He sentenced Baker to 150 hours community service and ordered him to pay £800 compensation.
