Street robberies in Ballymena

BALLYMENA PSNI are urging members of the public to be vigilant and aware of their personal safety following recent reports of street robberies in the town.

Police revealed yesterday (Monday) that a man was reportedly the victim of a street robbery on the pathway between Cushendall Road and Herbison Park at around 10.30pm on Wednesday, October 5. The victim had a sum of cash stolen by two men and sustained minor injuries.

The next day, October 6, at 3.15pm, it was reported that a man was approached by a male near the Braidwater Retail Park area after he withdrew cash from a nearby ATM. The male, described as wearing a grey shirt, stole the recently withdrawn money from the victim and ran off.

Ballymena Inspector Bouma said: “We ask anyone who witnessed these incidents or has any information in relation to them, to contact police in Ballymena on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Any reports of street robberies are of real concern to police and we have increased deployment of both high visibility patrols and other officers to identified areas. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, contact police immediately. Your prompt information could help prevent a crime from taking place”.

Inspector Bouma explained that some important steps should be taken to help minimise the risk of becoming a victim of this kind of crime.

“When out walking, always try to stay within well-lit and busy areas. When using an ATM, take note of who is around you and put your money and card away before leaving the cash machine. Avoid walking away from the machine with the money still in your hand.

“Try not to advertise your valuables, mobile phone, laptop, MP3 player and jewellery but remember, your personal safety is more important than your belongings. If you feel in danger, let your valuables go.”
