Teenager arrested during disturbance

Police officers had to use CS spray while attending a disturbance in the city last night, Wednesday.

At around 9.50pm officers were tasked to Leafair Gardens following reports of youths causing a disturbance, where they subsequently arrested a 17-year-old male for disorderly behaviour.

He was later released and a report is to be sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

A PSNI spokesman said police used CS irritant spray to bring the situation under control.

“Whilst in attendance at this disturbance police vehicles came under attack by youths throwing heavy masonry,” he said.

“Two police vehicles were substantially damaged.

There were no injuries sustained.”

Police also received reports in the early hours of this morning, Thursday, April 9, that shots had been fired in the Leafair area at around 11.20pm. Enquiries are continuing.

Inspector Jonathan Cooke said: “I would appeal to anyone who has any information about these incidents to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.

“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
