Teenager breached bail Londonderry Court is told

In Court was Jordan Hazlett, of Ernest Street in the Cityside, faces a charge of theft relating to an incident on June 27, as well as one of criminal damage to an electronic tag worth £190.

The teenage defendant is currently on bail in respect of charges of burglary, making off without paying for goods or services and disorderly behaviour, which relate to incidents between April and June this year.

He was brought to court for breaching bail after consuming alcohol with his mother and uncle.

It was revealed he had breached bail last week by cutting off an electronic tag.

The officer said police were opposed to bail as the teen has shown ‘that he will not abide by any conditions’.

The 19-year-old wept throughout the hearing.

Defence solicitor Party MacDermott told the court his client has a ‘myriad of difficulties’ including an addiction to alcohol.

The solicitor said the defendant’s’s uncle “prevailed upon him to consume alcohol” on the night in question.

As Mr MacDermott made his submissions, the judge asked prison officers to remove Hazlett from the dock as he appeared to be having some sort of seizure.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he was not convinced about releasing Hazlett to live with his mother, as his mother and uncle encouraged him to drink even though it was against a ‘strict condition of his bail’.

He released Hazlett to reside at an address in Limavady with his grandmother and he will appear in court again on July 23.
