Teenager punched woman in face

A teenager who punched a woman in the face was been jailed for three months when he appeared before Londonderry Magistrates Court.

Michael Connors (19), of Strabane Old Road, pleaded guilty to one charge of common assault on November 15, last year.

The injured party was along with friends in a park in Foyle Street. Connors got into an argument with her friends and the injured party attempted to get him away.

He then punched the woman in the face. She received treatment in Altnagelvin Hospital.

During police interview Connors denied the assault.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court his client has 20 previous convictions, but there is nothing similar on his record.

He added that Connors was a sentenced prisoner and is not due for release until May next year.

Jailing the teenager for three months, District Judge Peter King said it was a nasty unprovoked assault.
