Theft of electricity concern

They are investigating the illegal abstraction of electricity at five addresses in the Drumbeg and Meadowbrook area.

The discovery was made as a result of operations carried out in the area on April 18 and 19.

The full details of the offences are currently under investigation with a view to prosecution.

Police in Craigavon in partnership with Northern Ireland Electricity are working to combat the illegal abstraction of electricity from homes across the Craigavon area.

Sergeant Peters, Brownlow Neighbourhood Policing Team commented: “No one who takes part in criminal activity is immune from police or other agencies who enforce the law and legal practices.

“Police became aware of concerns about electricity abstraction in this area and, through close partnership work with representatives from NIE, were able to put into place a successful plan of action.

“We will continue to work together to target this illegal activity.”

Tom Doran, Metering Manager at NIE, said, “It is not only illegal to tamper with an electricity meter but it is also extremely dangerous.

“An electricity meter is a live piece of equipment and interfering with it puts individuals and property at risk.

“For example, in this area we recently replaced an extremely dangerous meter that had previously been tampered with in a home with a young family.

“The safety of our customers and employees remains our number one priority.”
