Two hurt in Portrush mugging

POLICE in Coleraine are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help them catch a gang who attacked and robbed two men on Tuesday night in the resort of Portrush.

Described by detectives as “aggravated assault”, the mugging took place at Causeway Street at around 11.15pm and involved both male and female assailants who made off with a number of items.

Although neither of the two victims received life-threatening injuries in the attack, one of the men is reported to have sustained “head injuries” and the other a laceration to his head.

Dubbing the robbery as an “absolutely appalling incident”, Coleraine Alliance Councillor, Barney Fitzpatrick, said he condemned the attack which he feared could damage the top resort’s family friendly image.

“My thoughts are with the two men following this horrific ordeal and I hope they make a swift recovery,” he said.

“People in the town will be very shocked at news of this incident. Portrush is a very friendly town and I am deeply troubled at this news.

“Anyone who has information on this incident should contact police immediately,” he added.
