Two men arrested in Dungannon over shootings in Newry last night

Two men were arrested by police in Dungannon today over two shootings that took place in Newry over night.

The 26 and 28-year-olds are being questioned on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and possession fo a firearm.

Two men, aged 32, are being treated in hospital after being shot in the leg in two separate incidents that “may be linked”.

A police spokesperson said: “A blue Volkswagen Passat car was stopped by police in Dungannon earlier today and two men were subsequently arrested.

“A 28-year-old man and 26-year-old man were arrested for kidnapping, attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

“They are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said: “We believe the incidents, which occurred in Sandys Street and Armagh Road in Newry, may be linked.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has information which may assist our investigation. Detectives in Newry can be contacted on 101, quoting ref: 46 170915.”
