Uninsured motorist took car for a run

A motorist who allowed another person to take her car for a run because she thought there was something wrong with it ended up in Londonderry Magistrates Court on a charge of permitting another to drive without insurance.

Prosecuting Counsel told the District Judge, Barney McElholm, that 25-year-old Emma McElhinney, of 4 St Columbas Walk, Greysteel, was charged with permitting Peter Carton to use a vehicle without valid insurance cover on January 27 this year, and the detection had occurred at Clooney Road in Londonderry.

A defence solicitor said that McElhinney was fully insured herself and, as she had small children, the car was essential to her.

Imposing penalty the District Judge, Barney McElholm, imposed a fine of £200 and disqualified her from driving for 14 days. He also ordered that she pay an Offender Levy of £15.
