Woman scratches police officer

A woman who scratched a police officer was given a one month jail sentence, suspended for two years when she appeared at Londonderry Magistrages Court.

Josie McCaughey (24), of Bonds Hill, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer on July 5.

The court heard police were called to a domestic incident and found McCaughey intoxicated. She became aggressive and shouted at the officers, hitting causing the scratch.

The court heard she had an “entrenched dependency on alcohol”.

McCaughey is currently subject to a probation order until June 2016.

Suspending sentence, Deputy District Judge Terence Dunlop said it would be improper to interfere with the order.

However, he warned McCaughey that whatever was going on in her life it was not appropriate to attack a police officer in the course of their duties.
