Young doctor in hospital after hit and run

A young doctor due to start work at Craigavon hospital is recovering as a patient there after a hit and run incident near Portadown.

The doctor and her sister were taken to hospital after being knocked off their bicycles by a motorist in a high-speed hit and run.

Fiona and Oonagh Murphy from Portadown were cycling twoard Moy when they were hit by an overtaking car.

The driver sped off as the sisters, both aged in their 20s, fell to the ground in the incident on the Moy Road near Portadown on Monday night.

Oonagh (28) was taken to Craigavon Hospital suffering severe injuries including a dislocated shoulder an broken cheekbone. She received 12 stitches for a face wound.

The junior doctor was due to start work at the hospital this week - but instead is attending as a patient.

Medical staff have told her that it could take several months to fully recover.

Her sister Fiona (25) who sustained cuts and bruises, told how she saw the dark-coloured car slow down followin gthe collision before driving off.

“I have cuts and bruises and I’m a wee bit sore but Oonagh is bad enough - she must have landed on her face,” she told the Irish News.

“Everybody is just hoping that Oonagh gets a bit better. I just get a bit upset thinking about her.”

Fiona expressed her thanks for those who stopped with them as well as emergency crews and hospital staff for their help.

It is understood the car’s left mirror broke off and the vehicle may have been left with dents on the bonnet and side door.
