Cross-community theme at Williamite dinner

The lodge event marks the anniversary of the birth of William of Orange and guest speaker for the event was David Scott, community education officer of the Grand Lodge.

He outlined something of his work and the work of the community education programme, which involves both educating those within the Orange community and also in the wider community.

Mr Scott said that it was interesting that more schools from the Catholic maintained sector than the controlled sector were involved with the Order’s education programme. He referred to his pride in being made the recipient of the first reconciliation award from St Patrick’s College, Bearnageeha, which is in North Belfast.

The award was presented by former Irish premier Bertie Ahern, and Mr Scott said that it showed that greater understanding could be created without anyone changing their principles.

The guest speaker complimented the lodge on its progress and congratulated the local band attached to the lodge, Magheramorne Silver, in his remarks.

Those present were welcomed to the dinner by Gary Beggs, WM, who thanked all those who had played a part in making the evening such a success, including Paula Lewis of the Smithytown Cultural Group.
