Crossing causing concern

CONCERN has been expressed about a new crossing in the town.

It has been brought to the attention of the 'MAIL' that the pelican crossing recently installed by the War Memorial in Church Place does not beep.

It is not mandatory that a pelican crossing makes a noise when the green man comes on, but it is generally seen as good practice to alert people who are visually impaired that it is safe to cross.

A council spokesperson pointed out: "The two crossings at Church Place are no longer fitted with audible warning devices – or beeps – as they operate independently from each other.

"As they are physically very close together one beep could be mistaken for another. Consequently the crossings are now fitted with ‘rotating tactile cones’ well known to visually impaired users helping them to cross safely."
