Crossing is welcomed

WARINGSTOWN is to get a long awaited pedestrian crossing on the Main Street, it has been announced.

The crossing was welcomed by both the DUP and Sinn Fein.

In a joint statement the DUP team, David Simpson MP, Cllr Carla Lockhart, Mayor of Craigavon, and Cllr Mark Baxter said: “We are delighted that Roads Service have finally taken the decision to place a puffin crossing close to where the school crossing patrol operates. This is a much needed and long lobbied for addition to Waringstown.

“Having lobbied extensively on the matter we are delighted that common sense has prevailed with Roads Service and that they have realised the dangers of crossing this very busy stretch of road.

“Pedestrian crossings are always a welcome addition particularly in a village the size of Waringstown. We have informed all the residents that have spoken with us on the matter and they too are delighted at this new addition to the village. Safety of pedestrians is of utmost importance and we believe that such a measure will slow the traffic significantly and will allow for a safe crossing point for all persons crossing the road at any time of the day.

“Whilst we welcome this facility we will, however, be continuing to lobby for a solution to the traffic congestion problems at the Mill Hill road junction. Major problems exist in that vicinity particularly in the mornings and Roads Service need to take further action to address this problem also.

“Roads Service have stated in writing their intention to carry out this work this financial year (subject to finance). PSNI have been consulted on the matter and are in agreement.”

Sinn Fein Cllr Liam Mackle also welcomed the news.

“Following extensive surveys of the vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area the Department of Regional Development have accepted the need for a crossing at a location close to the rear entrance to the village Primary School.

Cllr Mackle said: “Subject to financial constraints Roads Service intends to erect a Puffin Crossing in the area of the current Main Street, school crossing patrol before the end of the present financial year. It can be a real ordeal to get across Main Street and this new crossing will make a real difference to the people of Waringstown.

“This is welcome news and is long overdue. A Puffin Crossing at this point will give parents and children great peace of mind on their journey to and from school.”

A DRD Roads Service spokesperson said: “Roads Service can confirm that the provision of a controlled crossing in Waringstown has been added to this year’s works programme.”
