Crossing patrol is back at Ballymacash

The crossing patrol that has continued on a voluntary basis in recent times has now met the necessary criteria to allow continuation during both morning and afternoon times.

Lagan Valley MLA Paul Givan welcomed the news that the Education Authority would now fund the patrol.

“I know from parents who contacted me, the very real concern that was caused by the withdrawal of this service for children’s safety when crossing the road,” said Mr Givan.

“Parents at Ballymacash Primary School kindly raised money for limited temporary provision and I am pleased that a more permanent solution has been provided.

“Following representations made to the Education Authority and TransportNI a new survey was carried out which demonstrated the criteria was being met therefore allowing for this much needed service to be reinstated.

“I have been advised by the Education Authority that the Transport Manager will go through the necessary to have the post filled for the commencement of the new school year in September 2015.

“I have been liaising with the school principal and this latest news of the reinstatement of the crossing funded by the Education Authority will create a safer route to school for many children in the area.

“This outcome demonstrates that working in partnership with the school, local community and public representatives we have been able to influence a decision that will assist in keeping local children safer on the roads.”

Lisburn Councillor Rhoda Walker, who has been lobbying the Education Authority for a crossing since last year, is delighted that the crossing will now be reinstated.

“I am delighted with the news that the Education Board are to fund the crossing patrol on this busy stretch of road from September,” she said.

“I have been working alongside the school on this issue since Mrs Dalzell retired after a long service with the school last November. As a past voluntary member of staff and a parent of a child at the school I know how much this is needed.

“The school has been very active in putting children’s safety first organising a fundraising day which enabled the school to fund this much needed service. Mrs Lee took on the role and has been a great asset to the Ballymacash Primary family. This is very much welcomed news to all in the area.”
