Crowds gather for Dixon Park re-opening

THE newly restored Dixon Park has reopened its gates to the public - exactly 75 years after it was first unveiled by Sir Thomas and Lady Edith Dixon.

The 1 million restoration project, supported by Larne council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, saw the park restored to its former glory, with a majestic new bandstand, grand entrance gates and even a new education centre for local young people.

Hundreds of excited residents gathered for the official opening ceremony at 3.30pm on Friday, and were entertained by 1930s style brass band music and performances by Larne Drama Circle.

Sir Dixon's great-grand-nephew, Lord Glentoran, was also in attendance and told the Larne Times of his delight at the outcome of the project.

"It is wonderful to see Dixon Park return to its rightful place at the heart of the community. The park had fallen a long way from its original splendour, but it is great to see people coming here and enjoying themselves once again," he said.
