Crowds gather for Great War book launch

A new book by a local councillor has shed light on the stories of men from Carrick, Greenisland and Whitehead who served in the Great War.

Large crowds gathered yesterday evening for the launch of Councillor John Stewart’s ‘Carrickfergus Great War Roll of Honour’ at Carrick Museum and Civic Centre.

The publication profiles over 1300 men from the area, some of whom never returned home.

Writing on his Facebook page, Cllr Stewart said: “I just want to put on record my thanks to the many people who attended the book launch or sent messages of support.

“This is the culmination of over five years of research into the men from Carrickfergus who fought and died during the Great War and will hopefully act as a memorial to ensure these men will never be forgotten.

“It was a huge honour to officially launch it last night along with a local Great War exhibition by Patricia and Peter Hawkins.

“Thank you again to the old Carrickfergus Council for the £2000 grant that helped ensure this piece of work finally made it to print. That grant along with all profits from sales from the book will be donated to the Royal British Legion to support the great work they do with veterans.”

Copies of the book are available at Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre and are priced at £20.
