CS Spray used on local man who assaulted police

LONDONDERRY'S Magistrate's Court has heard how police had to use CS spray to subdue a 20-year-old man who was disorderely and assaulted police officers.

John Paul McDermott, of Grousehill Park, Waterside, who pleaded guilty to the charge of disorderly behaviour and a further two assaults on police relating to an incident on John Street on November 15, 2008, was given a three month jail term for disorderly behaviour suspended for eighteen months.

The court heard that police were tasked to the area and, when they arrived, McDermott became verbally abusive.

The 20-year-old told officers to 'f*** off, scumbags' before calling them 'orange b*******.'

Police told McDermott he was going to be arrested and he ran off.

They caught up with him a short time later and he struggled with police, kicking and spitting at them.

Officers gave a warning to McDermott and had to 'deploy CS spray to subdue him.'

A defence solicitor told the court the 20-year-old "very much regrets getting involved with police in this manner."

Handing down the suspended jail term, District Judge Barney McElholm said it was a 'disgraceful incident.'

The judge also ordered McDermott to pay 250 compensation to the police officer he assaulted.
