Culture Committee visits city

CULTURE, Arts and Leisure Committee members received a briefing from senior Council, Ilex and Culture Company officials on the cultural agenda and potential for regeneration in Londonderry during a recent visit.

The group met with Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney at the Guildhall before taking a tour of the Playhouse, An Cultúrlann and the new Peace Bridge.

Town Clerk Ms Sharon O’Connor highlighted the important role the Council plays in providing leadership to assist all City partnership organisations to work collaboratively to exploit the full potential of the One Plan and the City of Culture 2013.

Ongoing investment in projects such as the Restoration of the Guildhall and planned activities within the community, including proposals for the interpretive centre for the Apprentice Boys were among the items highlighted.

She said: “In cultural terms we need to create educational programmes that support the growth of the cultural sector including professional development to ensure that legacy is assured in the small business creation, which we anticipate will occur as a consequence of 2013.”

Ms O’Connor urged the committee to support the city’s efforts to build on its own investment saying any investment in this regional project will create significant impact in the wider region across the border area, reaching out to Coleraine, Limavady, Strabane and Omagh.

“The City of Culture offers potential for jobs and business within arts, culture and science and represents a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for the city and the region,” she concluded.
