Cunningham becomes last ever chairman of Moyle District Council

The SDLP’S Donal Cunningham has become the last ever chairman of Moyle District Council.

He took over the chain of office from Sinn Fein’s Cllr Cara McShane on Monday evening at the Council’s final Annual General Meeting before it becomes subsumed into the new Causeway Coast and Glens ‘super’ Council.

Sinn Fein’s councillor Colm Thompson was declared vice-chairman of the Council.

The new chair Cllr Cunningham pledged to dedicate his year in office to community groups in the Moyle area and promised that he would be “a passionate voice for Moyle”.

“Let us make respect our watchword this year,” he hold the AGM.

“Let us respect all mandates and traditions.”

Handing over the chain of office, Cllr Cara McShane said that some of the highlights of her year had been the Giro d’Italia and the visit from GAA star DJ Carey.

She said it had been an honour to serve as chair of Moyle Council for a second year and paid tribute to her vice-chairman Cllr Robert McIlroy for his support.
