Cut in grass cutting

BLEARY residents have got fed-up watching the grass grow.

And the council has said more areas will not have the grass cut around the borough.

One resident said he was fed up with grass not being cut in the rural area.

He said the council was ignoring areas outside of the main centres in the Craigavon borough.

"Our grass is getting very long, but its now the same everywhere else across the area," he said.

"We all know the council is trying to cut costs and I fear the people living in the rural areas will be the first affected.

"Other areas like Waringstown are given thousands of pounds worth of flowers every year, but we can't even get the grass cut.

"Waringstown looks good and I commend them for it and in other areas flowers would probably be vandalised but we all pay the same rates and there is no reason when we should get a different service."

This year the council spent around 6,000 on flowers for the Ulster in Bloom competition.

The money was divided among various community groups including Bleary, Magheralin, Donaghcloney, Charlestown and Derrytrasna.

A council spokeswoman said: "Craigavon Borough Council like many other organisations has had to make efficiency savings and council has decided to reduce the level of grass cutting and maintenance on lands which do not belong to the council.

"Residents will notice this throughout the borough but will hopefully appreciate why this decision has been made.

"This will apply to a number of locations across the borough."
