Cycle trek to raise funding

Harold Robinson, who is originally from Portadown and his Lurgan-born wife Ann are proud of their son Steven and his friends who hope to raise a lot of cash for a number of charities.

Steven and friends arrive with two support teams and start their trek around the Northern Ireland on Wednesday, July 30, covering a whopping 317 miles.

The charities being supported include, Breast Cancer Care, Action Medical Research for Children, Boss Benevolent Fund and Maggie’s, a cancer care centre.

They are being waved off from the Belfast City Hall on Wednesday at 1pm by the Lord Mayor after which they proceed to Newry for a night at the Canal Court Hotel.

On Thursday they proceed to Enniskillen. On their way they will be stopping for their morning coffee break at the Robinson family home at Tudor Grange, Waringstown.

They expect to arrive at Waringstown at around 9.30am to 10am, leaving some 30 minutes later, after which they proceed to Enniskillen. The third stage will take them to Port Ballintrea, where they hope to pay a visit to Bushmills and the Giants Causeway.

From there they will proceed back to Belfast via the coastal route, arriving back at the City Hall around 4pm on Saturday, August 2.

The group are part of the Oblivion Tour - mature cyclists who raise money for charity. So far they have done London to Paris (2010), London to Paris in 36 Hours (2012), London to Brussels (2013).

“We are doing these rides largely to try and hold back the ravages of time, and for the camaraderie, but we also raise a bit of money along the way - and have racked up just over £30,000 over the four rides so far,” said Steve.
