The incident, which is understood to have occurred at around 6.30pm just two miles from Moneymore, led to the dual carriageway being closed to traffic in the direction of Cookstown.

At around 6.35pm police received a report that a cyclist had been struck by a car.

It is thought the man, from Magherafelt, had been on his way to a 5k fun run at Lough Fea, though this is yet to be confirmed.

At 7.30pm police said the cyclist’s injuries were not understood to be life-threatening “at this time”, but later on Wednesday a spokesperson for the Northern Trust said his condition was critical.

He was first taken to Antrim Area Hospital but was moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital late last night.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the collision. The number to call is 101.
