Dame Mary reads with Lisburn Leo talking newspaper

DAME Mary Peters joined the volunteer readers of the Lisburn Leo Talking Newspaper to read some of the stories from the Ulster Star during the recording, which is sent out to the blind and partially sighted members of the greater Lisburn community.

Dame Mary showed a great interest in how the Lisburn Leo provides local news coverage to the visually impaired community, keeping them informed of matters which don’t receive coverage on province wide radio and television. She asked a range of relevant questions regarding how long the free service has been in operation, numbers of listeners, how the service operates and is financed. She acknowledged the work of the Lisburn Soroptimists who have been assisting in the talking newspaper’s production for several years.

She was interested to hear that the talking newspaper was on the lookout for technicians to assist with the recording and copying tasks in their Friday morning sessions.

During her visit, Mary praised the volunteer readers, administrators and technicians for their dedication in giving their time to lessen the isolation caused by lack of local information. After the reading Dame Mary joined the volunteers for a chat and a cuppa, during which she was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Joyce Moran who thanked her, not only reading but being a wonderful ambassador for the people of Lisburn.
