Damp problems cause headache for Moira man

A MOIRA resident has hit out at the Northern Ireland Housing Executive after his home, which was treated for damp last year, is once again suffering the problem.

The man, who lives at Claremont Crescent, had two walls in his bedroom treated for damp last year. However, the problem has now developed on another wall in the room.

"They sent people out to test it and said it would be fixed before Christmas. Unfortunately I had the flu just before Christmas and had to cancel, but when I called them last week to get them to carry out the work, I couldn't get anyone to tell me anything" he said.

"I suffer from anxiety and depression and this isn't helping matters. The smell is bad and it is causing breathing difficulties.

"I just want them to come out and finish the job," he said.

An NIHE spokesperson said: "We recently arranged for a specialist contractor to carry out a survey in this property following a report of dampness. The report recommended the installation of a new damp proof course and this work was carried out. It was later identified that a small area of the wall had been excluded. We have asked the contractor to provide a report on this portion of wall, and appropriate work will be carried out in response to the contractor's report."

The spokesperson added that the man has been kept advised of the situation.

The DUP's Paul Stewart, personal assistant to Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson, has sent a letter on the man's behalf to the Housing Executive.

Mr Stewart commented: "The gentleman came to us back in the first week of September in reference to the damp in his house. The Housing Executive did respond and I received a letter from the District Maintenance Manager to say that they did treat two walls for damp. The gentleman didn't contact us again until early this week to say there was a new problem and I have sent a new letter to the District Maintenance Manager and we will await their response."
