The country crooner, 51, appealed to fans not to send their good wishes in cards or letters, saying the pair cannot deal with a lot of mail.

“All we need are your prayers to help us through this difficult time and we know we can rely on that,” he said.

Majella, 53, has been heavily involved in her husband’s music career since their marriage in 2002.

They have made numerous personal appearances together throughout the years and Majella has joined her husband on stage for a duet on many occasions.

The couple first met while Daniel was on holiday in Tenerife in 1999.

Daniel, on his website, said it felt like they had known each other their entire lives, describing Majella as “down-to-earth, funny and very much her own person with an understated self-confidence”.

The I Just Want to Dance with You singer proposed on Christmas Day 2001 - saying he was so content and happy it was almost sickening.

He said their wedding was the most fantastic day of both their lives.

Majella has two children from a previous marriage, 25-year-old Michael and Siobhan, 22.

Both she and Daniel have spoken openly about the fact they never had their own, saying it was not meant to be.

Fans have taken to social media sites Facebook and Twitter to wish the pair well as Majella’s treatment gets under way.

The Thurles, Co Tipperary native has spoken previously about her battles with depression.

She gave a talk about her experiences last year at Feel Good Fortnight - a two-week event in Buncrana, Co Donegal that promotes positive thinking and community spirit.
