A large crowd attended the commemoration event in Bellaghy, marking the 35th anniversary of the hunger striker’s death.

The ceremony also included an historical reenactment as part of the 1916 Easter Rising centenary programme.

Mid Ulster Sinn Fein MLA Ian Milne said: “Sunday’s tribute was held close to Tom McElwee’s grave side with personal recollections given by Colm Scullion who was a close friend and comrade, and Danny Morrison.”

The bands who led the parade, the South Derry Martyrs Flute Band, the South Derry Rising Reenactors, the Rising Sons of Ireland Flute Band, Rasharkin and Eire Nua Flute Band, Belfast added colour and vibrancy to the occasion.

Mr Milne called on local people to travel this Sunday to Belfast to join other republicans marking the 1981 hunger strike.
