DARD to have 'more visible presence' at Oul Lammas at Fair

DEPARTMENT of Agriculture and Rural Development officials will have a "more visible presence" at the Lammas Fair this year to help monitor horses, Moyle Council Chairperson Cara McShane says.

The Sinn Fein councillor was speaking after being part of a Council delegation to meet Department top brass.

Cllr McShane said DARD officials said they will enforce the issue of ‘passports’ for horses which are traded at the Fair.

And she said DARD gave a commitment they will have a more visible presence at the Fair during the actual Fair itself and the days leading up to it.

She said it is a step forward that DARD will be involved in pre-planning for the Fair.

SDLP councillor Madeline Black said anything which improves the situation with horses in the Fairhill Street of Ballycastle in particular will be welcomed by residents there.

In recent years steps have been taken to improve safety at Fairhill Street and to keep pedestrians separated from fast moving horses which are often put through their paces as part of the trading of the animals.
