Date for the diary: RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

The RSPB’s annual Big Garden Birdwatch is back on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January, giving people across the UK the chance to be part of the world’s biggest wildlife survey.

More than 12,000 people took part here last year and of the 127,700 birds counted in Northern Ireland, house sparrows were the most commonly seen.

Despite the wet and windy conditions during the two-day Birdwatch, these cheeky little birds were spotted in 66 per cent of gardens.

The wildlife survey, now in its 36th year, provides the RSPB with an important snapshot of garden bird populations in winter. For the second year running the RSPB is also asking participants to log the other wildlife they see in their outside spaces, to help the charity build an overall picture of how important our gardens are for giving nature a home.
