DCC apply for22 art works to boost access

OFFICERS from Londonderry’s Heritage and Museum Service have successfully applied for 22 artworks - the largest number in the province - under an Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI) plan to boost public appreciation and access to modern art.

The collection includes work by a number of well-known artists including Denise Ferran, Declan McGonagle and Tom Carr

Last year ACNI announced plans to gift works from its collection to registered museums and galleries in Northern Ireland.

A report by the Acting Town Clerk to the Derry city Council Development Committee yestarday revealed: “The collection has been amassed over many years, and represents a broad view of the strengths of local visual arts.

“The aim of the gifting scheme is to increase public appreciation and access to modern and contemporary art from the north of Ireland.

“Officers from the Heritage and Museum Service and Arts sections applied for a number of artworks and have been successful in being offered 22 pieces.

“This is the largest number received by any of the local authority museums in Northern Ireland.

“A number of these works are currently on loan to other institutions, but once the acquisition procedures are completed, officers hope to display as many as possible.”
