DE not linkedto imperilledyouth scheme

EDUCATION Minister John O’Dowd says his Department has no direct relationship with a Londonderry youth project under threat due to the cessation of its funding this month.

The Bytes Project is one of the city’s leading youth projects and helps young people (16-25) develop through creative and enjoyable use of technology.

The Sentinel recently reported how it was under threat with Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry revealing that financial support from one of its key funders stops this month pending a review of operations.

Now the Education Minister has advised his Department no longer has a direct relationship with the project.

Mr O’Dowd stated: “My Department does not have a direct relationship with the Bytes Project; it is one of a number of voluntary youth service organisations which is currently funded by the Youth Council.

“Funding was previously provided directly to Bytes by DE. However, in line with the aims of convergence planning and in order to strengthen accountability, the funding arrangements for the organisation were passed to the Youth Council in 2010.

“It is, therefore, for the Youth Council to determine the level of funding for Bytes in line with DE priorities, its published funding scheme and the available budget.”
