Dead lambs are dumped at tourist beauty spot

BAGS containing dead lambs were dumped at a popular picnic area near Loughgiel last week prompting a council official to describe the perpetrator as "an embarrassment to the farming fraternity".

The putrid discovery was made on Wednesday by a member of the public at the Altirichard Road.

Approximately 18 spring lamb carcasses had been jammed into the bags and dumped at the site which is popular with children and walkers.

The gruesome find came one week after ice storms wreaked havoc in north Antrim and led to the death of scores of newborn lambs.

Under government legislation farmers can no longer bury dead animals on their ground and must have them processed properly.

A spokesperson for Ballymoney Borough Council hit out at whoever was responsible for dumping the dead lambs at the popular area.

She said: "This is an area is of outstanding natural beauty, peace and tranquillity.

"Many local residents and indeed tourists park at the picnic area to enjoy the tranquillity and also avail of a walk which is within the facility.

"The bags were adjacent to the start of the walkway. Over the holiday period there would have been families with young children availing of the site.

"What sort of farmer would do this ?

"Obviously an irresponsible one uninterested in their environment with no respect for their more responsible hardworking colleagues. "This person or indeed persons are an embarrassment to the farming fraternity and profession.

"I wish to appeal to the general public to report anyone they see fly-tipping or indeed throwing litter from a car.

"Anyone detected dumping dead animals will also be reported to the Department of Agriculture. The borough will continue to be heavily monitored in a bid to detect offenders and I must warn that those detected will face the full rigor of the law.

"Borough council officers continually strive to create a cleaner, healthier environment for all and rely on the general public for their support and co-operation."

Anyone with any information in relation to fly-tipping should contact the council on 02827660257.
