Deadline extended for library refurb

The facility had been previously earmarked for closure by Libraries NI, but was given a reprieve last year on the condition that the building’s landlord (Larne Borough Council) would press ahead with plans to redevelop the facility and make it sustainable.

The Times understands that the total cost of the project is more than £300,000.

DARD is contributing funding to the tune of £30,000 through the Rural Development Programme, and the remainder is to be provided by the council.

However, East Antrim MLA Oliver McMullan said the DARD grant was at risk of being lost unless work began on the project in the next few weeks.

He added: “I have been pursuing this matter at Assembly level, and my party colleague, Councillor James McKeown has been a driving force at Larne Borough Council level.

“If the money from the Rural Development Programme was lots, the whole project could be put in jeopardy.

“Fortunately, the deadline for work to begin has now been extended until September.

“I want to congratulate James for helping to get things to this stage and also urge everyone in Carnlough to use the library, because the whole project depends on continued high usage of the library facilities.”

Cllr McKeown said: “I am grateful to my colleague Mr McMullan for helping to secure this extension.

“This is a very important project for the people of Carnlough and I look forward to seeing the refurbishment completed.”
