Deaf performers showcase signed improvisation skills

The Playhouse has partnered with the North West Regional College and deafness charity Action on Hearing Loss to deliver a 12 week OCN Level 2 accredited performing arts course through the medium of sign language.

The event will showcase a variety of improvised pieces, which will be judged by local deaf people.

Sharon McLennan, Education Officer with the Playhouse says: “This intensive Improvisation course is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long term partnership to train deaf people in performing arts. The aim is to then tour a full theatre production in 2012.”

Stephanie Donnelly, Project Co-ordinator with Action on Hearing Loss’ Sensory Engagement Programme says: “This is a unique opportunity for deaf people to access accredited training, gain new skills and increase their confidence, through their first language. We would encourage other training providers to ensure their services are fully accessible to all.”
