Deaf pupils doing less well in WELB schools

DEAF pupils in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) achieve less GCSEs proportionately than their non-hearing impaired schoolmates.

New figures show that in 2007/8 less than five deaf pupils achieved at least five GCSEs (grades A-C) in WELB.

And in 2008/9 seven deaf pupils left school with five GCSEs here - just 53.8 per cent - whilst the number dropped to less than five again in 2009/10.

By comparison 2,935 (72.4 per cent) of WELB pupils, generally, achieved five GCSEs between the grades A to C.

Education Minister John O’Dowd provided the information in response to local Assembly member Pat Ramsey.

Mr Ramsey had asked hime to detail the percentage of school leavers with hearing loss/deafness who achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A* - C, broken down by Education and Library Board areas.
