The sudden passing of Hugh McCloy at Causeway Hospital Coleraine on Saturday afternoon 27th February 2010 caused widespread sorrow and a deep sense of loss in the town of Garvagh and the surrounding area.

Hugh had taken ill suddenly at his home, 15 Ballinameen Avenue Garvagh, medical aid was sent for but unfortunately despite the efforts of doctors and medical staff he passed away at lunch time in the presence of his wife, son and daughter.

Hugh was brought up in the Killowen district of Coleraine, in his youth his interest was in rowing on the Bann and the competitions with crews in Queens University Belfast and Trinity University Dublin. He also followed with great interest the progress of Rowing Olympian Alan Campbell.

Following his marriage to Miss Isobel Mullan of 81 Main Street Garvagh, they enjoyed 45 year of married life and bringing up a family of 2 sons and a daughter – John, Beverley and Lester.

The personality of Hugh was enjoyed by all his family and a large host of friends, his heady wit, his wonderful smile and this art of conversation was enjoyed by all with whom he came in contact. He was a devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law to Paula and a much appreciated grandfather of Justin, Jonnie, Lauren, Hannah and Abi.

Among his hobbies was walking, up to recently he would be seen walking in Garvagh Forest with his dog Max. He was a valued member of Main Street Presbyterian Church, a regular attendee at all the services, member of the choir and a much respected member of the 'Men's Group'.

During the past few months due to declining health he was unable to be present at church services and for him it was regrettable not to be in his place of worship. In these times he had the wonderful support of his dear wife Isobel and he had the dedication and love of his daughter Beverley who daily attended to his needs despite holding down her career as a primary school teacher in Magherafelt. He was also lovingly attended by his son Lester and his wife Paula who was always at hand to assist.

The funeral was from his home 15 Ballinameen Avenue with a thanksgiving service on Monday at 1pm. In his address Rev Kelly spoke of the personality of the late Hugh McCloy and of his sudden passing, he said he was a man of large stature with a big heart to match. He added that with Hugh what you saw is what you got, a good natured man much respected by all the community. He spoke of Hugh's Christian example, of his involvement in all aspects of Church life and especially of his interest and commitment to the Small Groups Bible Study.

He added, 'Today we are all privileged to have known Hugh McCloy and it is the prayer of all that his wife, family and family circle will find solace and consolation that many people share in their sad loss.'

Following his interment in the adjoining churchyard the family moved to the Church Hall to receive the condolences of all present and to enjoy a welcome cup of tea and refreshments.

GIBSON — The daughter and son-in-law of the late Anna Gibson would like to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with them in their recent sad bereavement. We appreciated all those kind friends and neighbours who called at our home, telephoned, brought gifts, sent letters or cards of sympathy, gave donations in lieu of flowers, attended the funeral or helped in any other way. We are so grateful for the kindness and loving care that was given to her by the nurses and staff of Garvagh Care Home during her 4 years as a resident. Also Dr John Kerr and the medical staff of Garvagh Health Centre for the attention she received over the years which was much appreciated. We would like to thank all those kind friends and neighbours who visited her and helped her when she resided in her home at Houston Crescent and the care workers who attended her there and all those many kind friends who took the time to visit her in the Garvagh Care Home when she became a resident. A special thanks to the Rev Mark Donald and the Rev Stanley Lindsay (First Garvagh) for their pastoral visits and spiritual guidance to her during her illness and for conducting the lovely funeral service and the Rev E Kirk and the Rev William Moody (Ahoghill) for visiting our home. To the ladies of First Garvagh P.W. for providing and serving a beautiful tea after the funeral service. To the organist and the grave digger for their help. Finally our thanks to Howard Mullan for the professional and dignified manner in which the funeral arrangements were carried out. Trusting this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as a token of our sincere appreciation.

Ahoghill.
