Debt Action helps local people

Debt Action NI, the money and debt service run by leading Northern Ireland charity, Advice NI, has helped 250 residents in Lisburn Council area deal with over £7.6 million debt since opening its doors in Lisburn in August of last year.

Credit card debt of £2 million accounted for most of this debt, followed by mortgage debt of nearly £1.75 million and mortgage shortfall debt of nearly £1 million. The average debt per person who contacted the service was £30,547.

The service is funded by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.

The Debt Action NI adviser in Lisburn, Anne Marie Carmichael said: “If you are struggling with debt, contact us urgently. Do not delay. Our service is free and confidential.

“These figures reflect how hard the recession and the housing market crash have hit the people of Lisburn. Many coming to the service can no longer cope with their mortgage and often want to walk away. Families are being hit hard in the local area because of the higher cost of living and lower wages. Many are struggling to make ends meet.”
