Dedication

PART of Sunday's service outside First Derry Presbyterian Church was the dedication of a plaque commemorating the restoration of the ancient building.

On the completion of the work at the church the plaque will be inscribed in brass and placed permanently in the vestibule of the church, thereby permanently marking the rebirth of one of Londonderry's most historic places.

In dedicating the plaque on Sunday, First Derry's Clerk of Session, Mr Derek Lee said: "It is my very great pleasure this morning to dedicate this plaque which will go into the church on completion of the work.

"The plaque says 'this plaque commemorates the commencement of work at First Derry Presbyterian Church after a seven-and-a-half year displacement, unveiled on Sunday, 22 March, 2010, by myself (Derek Lee) as Clerk of Session and dedicated to the glory of God by the Reverend Dr David Latimer, our minister'.

"And, I would like now to present the plaque and to dedicate on your behalf to the glory of God."

On finishing the dedication, Mr Lee's words were greeted with tumultuous applause by the assembled congregation.

Completing the dedication Reverend Latimer gave a blessing and said: "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, we celebrate the commencement of work on First Derry Presbyterian Church.

"In this place may truth flourish. Here, may the voice of prayer be continually heard. Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth and for evermore.

"Let us pray together. Almighty and everlasting God, who has built the living temple of your church on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone, confirm and bless that which have now done in your name and prosper the work that you have given us to do.

"Remember all those who have planned and who have offered themselves to this further this work on our behalf. Shield and protect those who will labour with their hands on this building and grant that this house now begun, may without hindrance and in due time stand complete in strength and beauty, a place fit for your dwelling, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with you, oh God, and the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen."
