Defendant has ‘reached a crossroads’

Michael McKernan (20), whose address was given to the court as Kiln Lodge, Lurgan, had admitted a series of offences and the case adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

He pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill and tampering with a vehicle on March 30 this year, unlawful possession of cannabis on May 24 and disorderly behaviour on May 5.

The case had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

He was also in breach of a suspended sentence imposed in December last year for similar matters.

District Judge, Mr Paul Copeland, said that it seemed to him that the defendant had reached a crossroads in his life.

He added that now he was alcohol and drug free he had a wiser and more balanced outlook.

The judge also referred to a testament from a senior public figure who knew the family well.

Judge Copeland felt that the case was appropriate for deferral on the understanding that McKernan engaged in a six month programme which was lined up for 
him.

He added that he hoped the defendant would respond to the goodwill extended to him.

Sentencing was deferred until June 15 next year.

“You have been offered this place down in Mayo,” the judge told McKernan. “Consider yourself fortunate to be going there rather than prison.”
