Defendant inquires when he can go out to buy paint

A PORTSTEWART man, charged with common assault, resisting police and possessing offensive weapon, left District Judge, Richard Wilson, baffled at last Wednesday's sitting of North Antrim Magistrates' Court.

Martin Robert Laverty (34) of Coleraine Road, was told to be quiet by Mr Wilson several times during his bail hearing. The defendant though took no notice and continued to inform the court that he was moving into a new house.

Both Laverty's solicitor and the District Judge warned him to be quiet as the terms of his bail were confirmed. The defendant was told that he was not allowed out of his new property between the hours of 8pm and 8am.

Laverty caused uproar in the court as he enquired what he was supposed to do if he wanted to buy paint to decorate his new house.

A perplexed Mr Wilson told Laverty that he would have to get it between 8am and 8pm.

Laverty will re-appear on February 17.
