Nineteen-year-old Emmett Byrne, whose address was given to the court as Ardowen, Craigavon, was fined £150 for being simple drunk on November 21 this year.

The court heard that at 2.25pm police received a report of a male trying to walk in front of traffic at Eastway.

They located the defendant and another male who ran off.

Byrne had to be helped up a steep embankment.

He looked to be under the influence of drink and/or drugs.

His speech was slurred and there was foam coming from the side of his mouth.

The defendant became very animated and made various comments to the police.

He tried to walk off and said further profanities to officers.

Byrne was so intoxicated he was not fit to be charged until nine hours later.

Mr Peter Murphy, representing the defendant, said Byrne had no recollection of what happened.

“That’s how seriously drunk he was,” added Mr Murphy.

He added that the defendant knows he needs help with alcohol and had managed to stay off drink for the last month.
