Defendants in shoplifting case '˜have issues with addiction'

A man who shoplifted and was spotted with a pair of wirecutters removing a security tag has been jailed for six months.

Martin Joseph Mort (44), of Galgorm Road, Ballymena, was detected at TK Maxx on September 20 this year. He attempted to steal a zip up top worth £24.99 which he damaged. He also had diazepam in his possession.

He told police he had the wirecutters because he was doing up a flat and “wiring plugs”. On August 2, Mort stole a Goodmans sound bar worth £39.99 from B&M Bargains.

Donna McAlonan (30), of Dunclug Park, also admitted the theft of the sound bar. The court heard CCTV showed Mort lifting it and giving the item to her. She had a record and was given three months in jail, suspended for three years.

Defence barrister Michael Smith said both defendants had addiction issues.
