Defibrillators for local clubs

For the second year in a row, Lisburn City Council has provided ten Sports Clubs within the Lisburn City area with a life-saving portable defibrillator.

The defibrillators have been provided through the Council’s Leisure Services Department which through its staff has provided dedicated emergency life-saving and defibrillator training to each of the ten clubs.

The following clubs have received portable defibrillators: Dunmurry Young Men, Townland Boxing Club, Dromara Cycling Club, South Antrim Hockey Club, Maghaberry Taekwondo Club, Lisburn Distillery FC, Meteor Water Ski Club, Lisburn Rangers, Lisnagarvey Ladies’ Bowling Club and Derriaghy FC

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, said: “It is a well-known fact that defibrillators can save lives and urgency in applications is key to their success.

“As life is precious and in recent years there has been a regrettable increase in the number of cardiac related deaths within sporting disciplines, the council has undertaken to provide portable defibrillators to local sports clubs that fulfilled certain criteria.

“Lisburn is very proud of its sporting history and as a recent European City of Sport the council wishes to support local clubs in a variety of ways.

Training on the use of defibrillators to the clubs was also provided.

These simple to operate devices will ensure that trained club representatives will be able to react in the crucial minutes following a coronary incident.

Lisburn City Council has a long-standing connection with cardiology, as Professor Frank Pantridge, CBE, the world-renowned pioneer of the portable defibrillator and mobile coronary care, was born and lived in Hillsborough. Thanks to his outstanding work miniature defibrillators are routinely used thousands of times daily throughout the world.”
