Delay to recycling facility opening

The opening date has been pushed back to Monday. May 23 to allow for the necessary works to be completed, which will increase the facility’s capacity fourfold offering a range of enhanced recycling services.

Conor Canning, Head of Environment with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the new recycling centre was a major investment by Council.

“We would like to apologise for the slight delay in the scheduled reopening of the centre, and we want to thank regular users of the facility for their patience while the work is being completed.

“We are delighted at the progress of the work so far and we are confident the public will be impressed by the new range of services at the centre. The transformation is a key capital development project representing an investment of over £1.5m from Council including £250,000 from Rethink Waste.

“The new facility not only boasts enhanced and improved recycling services but is more accessible, safer and more user friendly, and is key in our ongoing commitment to improve recycling across the Council area. We want to ensure that it meets the very highest standards from the first day of opening,” he added.

While the Pennyburn facility remains closed the public are asked to access the Council’s other recycling centres across the district.
