Delivery of Ballyclare road safety scheme a step closer

The Department for Regional Development has confirmed that it is drawing up a traffic calming scheme for Avondale Drive in Ballyclare.

The move comes after concerns were raised by local political and community representatives about pedestrian safety in the area, particularly in the vicinity of the children’s play park.

A DRD spokesperson said that while a traffic calming scheme is now being designed, delivery will depend on the availability of finance.

She revealed that it is “unlikely to be delivered during the remainder of this financial year” and stressed that consultation will take place with local residents and politicians before the scheme is implemented.

Welcoming confirmation that the scheme is being progressed, local PUP representative Scott McDowell said: “Thankfully we’re finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

“It does concern me that the process seems to be dragging on, but I’m sure this will be welcomed by residents in the area and all those who use the park.”
