‘Dementia funding inadequate’

SDLP Health Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has questioned the effectiveness of the new dementia strategy unveiled by health minister Edwin Poots today.

The Foyle MLA said: “Dementia is a huge problem right across these islands and with an ageing population there is going to be ever-increasing pressure on already strained dementia services.

“While I welcome the fact that the Minister has finally unveiled a dementia strategy, I am extremely disappointed that we are being told that there are no additional resources available to implement the findings of the strategy.

“It would seem that this strategy merely pays lip service to addressing what is a very difficult problem for many sufferers and their families. They will be horrified to hear the assertion that efficiencies will need to be found within the existing system which had already seen their services reduced and care packages cut.

“Furthermore, the Minister must make a strong case to the Executive that investment in this strategy now is vital and will be extremely cost effective in the future.

“We need this government to start putting its money where its mouth is.”
