Demolition of flats welcome

THE demolition of derelict eyesores in Craigavon has been welcomed.

The Housing Executive have demolished derelict houses and garages in Legahory and plan to level some of the vacant flats at Moyraverty and Aldervale.

According to the District Housing Plan, 73 of the 115 flats at Aldervale are vacant and at Moyraverty, following a blaze in August 2009, 12 of the 22 units are uninhabitable. Approval was given earlier this year for partial demolition at these locations.

At Legahory, only a small number of derelict properties remain and the executive has said they plan to demolish them all.

Commenting on the demolition work, Councillor Kieran Corr said: "I would also like to thank the executive for the demolition of derelict dwellings and garages in the Legahory area which have been an eyesore for years and welcome the fact that the plan is to demolition them all.

"I also welcome the fact that there will also be demolitions at both Moyraverty flats and Aldervale Flats.

The Housing Executive stated: “We continue to place high importance on reducing the number of empty properties within the Craigavon borough.

"Over the past year we have reduced the number of empty homes through our voids reinstatement programme. Void levels in the borough will reduce dramatically once we address the Aldervale Flats and Moyraverty Centre complexes. We have demolition plans for both these sites which will proceed when the remaining tenants are rehoused.”
